Kids in British Schools

Teacher's Notes: Tipps zur Arbeit mit dieser Einheit:

“Kids in British Schools” consists of 10 self-contained tasks that highlight various aspects of British school life.
As the individual units are independent of each other there is no particular order in which they must be done. Both the subject and the corresponding links were chosen with the interests of the target group in mind.
The BBC Newsreader site, in particular, is so frequently referred to because it offers our students a view of school from the perspective of their peers. The texts found at this site are highly authentic without being overly complex for students in their fourth year of learning English as a foreign language.
To ensure the students' comprehension of more difficult sites, several monolingual alphabetical word lists [based on the excellent Macmillan's English Dictionary for Advanced Learners (MED)] are provided.
Furthermore, most tasks are accompanied by printable / downloadable worksheets that guide the students' reading.
Most tasks will take one or two 45-minute periods to complete (one period for the gathering of information, and (part of) the other for extension activities and classroom work on the basis of the students' findings.)
Teachers who wish to feel better prepared when standing in for their colleagues at a moment's notice might want to keep extra sets of the worksheets handy among their resources at school.
The present DID-module is ideally suited to fill the framework of your school's project week. Your students will thank you for it.

A la Une : Ten activities from Jürgen Wagner

Our German colleague Jürgen Wagner has created ten activities called "Kids in British Schools", that he has tested with his students. They will soon be published in the German magazine "Diesterweg Internet Detective", so we also benefit from a professional layout...
Each task includes a worksheet that you can download for free (in the word format so easy to adapt to your students if you wish to do so) and several links to articles and websites to work from. The topics are varied, but all related to kids in British school : life in present schools and in Victorian schools, uniforms, discipline, truancy, term-time holidays,
bullying, mobile phones, texting, etc.
For each activity you will find excellent links, mostly from the BBC, including for example a video to teach kids to react to bullying or a dictionary to translate text lingo.

Don't miss those ready to use activities, for intermediate students and above.

Le Café Pédagogique: http://www.cafepedagogique.net/disci/anglais/58.php - Ten activities from Jürgen Wagner
